FIFA bans council member Niersbach in World Cup bids probe (The Associated Press)
FIFA council member Wolfgang Niersbach, a member of FIFA's ruling council, was banned from soccer for one year on Monday in the first sanction from the investigation into Germany's 2006 World Cup bid. FIFA's ethics committee found Niersbach guilty of failing to report findings about possible unethical conduct and conflicts of interest during the bidding process. Last year, Niersbach had been considered a possible successor to UEFA President Michel Platini before resigning as president of the German soccer federation when allegations against the bid first surfaced. An official with Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union says the team is aware that a TV analyst has pleaded guilty to receiving nearly $500,000 in kickbacks for filling unneeded prescriptions for himself and recruiting others to the scheme. Tim McDermott, the Union's chief business officer, said the team learned Tuesday that Peter Pappas had pleaded guilty. Pro soccer TV analyst pleads guilty to drug kickback scheme (The Associated Press)
A TV analyst for Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union pleaded guilty Tuesday to receiving nearly $500,000 in kickbacks for filling unneeded prescriptions for himself and recruiting others to the scheme. Peter Pappas, of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health fraud in federal court in Newark. The pharmaceutical salesman admitted he was recruited by a marketing company that was paid by pharmacies to refer people whose insurance paid for compounded medication including pain creams, scar creams and vitamins. A court has dismissed assault charges against one of Egypt's best known football stars after a police photographer who he chased and kicked on an empty pitch withdrew his complaint. In its ruling on Saturday, the court in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia fined retired international forward Hossam Hassan $50 for damaging the photographer's camera. FIFA ethics prosecutors want former executive committee member Worawi Makudi of Thailand banned for at least four years for election forgery and other misconduct. The investigations unit of the FIFA ethics committee says it sent a case file to the judging chamber which can impose punishments, and also requested a 25,000 Swiss franc ($25,500) fine. The value of the National Football League's Cowboys rose 25 percent to $4 billion compared to last year, while the value of 10-time European champions Real Madrid rose 12 percent to $3.65 billion over the same period, Forbes said in a statement.
